The Challenge

A prototype build answers a design question with whatever process can answer it. A pilot asks the intended parts, the intended process and the intended assembly to repeat, so you can see what repetition adds: variation, an unclear instruction, a supplier substitution, a test that takes longer than the build.

A pilot is not mass production either. It is allowed to find problems.

The Outcome

The bill of materials is the buying list, with substitutes labelled. Someone who did not design the product can assemble and test from the pack. Known cheats are written before the first unit, so they are not 'findings'.
