The Challenge
Taking a hardware prototype to production means refining the design so it can be manufactured, assembled, and tested repeatedly. Teams need requirements review, mechanical and electronics refinement, DFM and DFA, validation, supplier preparation, a pilot build, and controlled manufacturing documentation.
A working prototype shows that an idea can function. Production preparation adds evidence that the intended product and build process can deliver acceptable results without the original developer fixing each unit by hand.

Description
This Insights guide walks founders and engineering teams from a functional prototype through production intent design, verification, manufacturing-route tradeoffs, pilot measurement, and a release package another team can use. It covers what changes after the prototype works, how to log workarounds, how to verify integrated hardware against written criteria, and how to hand off mechanical, electronics, build, and change-control documentation.

The Outcome
Advance only with documented evidence: baseline the prototype, close the gap list, and verify the integrated product against written criteria. Use the pilot to measure first-pass yield and defect causes, not just final acceptance. Release a coordinated manufacturing package so another team can build, test, and change the product without tribal knowledge.
“A working prototype proves the idea can function. Production readiness proves another team can build it without the original developer fixing each unit by hand.”
