Industrial design and product engineering answer different questions.

The Challenge
Industrial design decides how a person recognises, holds, reads and trusts the product: form, controls, colour, finish, and the sequence of use. Product engineering decides how that form is made, how parts fit, how electronics and mechanisms survive inside it, and how someone else assembles it. Both are design. Neither is a coat of paint on the other.
A model that cannot be moulded, sealed or assembled is industrial design that has not met engineering. A structure nobody can hold, open or understand is engineering that has not met use.

Description
This Insights guide explains ID vs Engineering for founders and engineering teams building hardware that must be manufactured, tested, and handed off. A model that cannot be moulded, sealed or assembled is industrial design that has not met engineering. A structure nobody can hold, open or understand is engineering that has not met use. It also covers what each side actually hands over; the arguments are supposed to differ; worked example: a grip that has to dock.

The Outcome
Use is written: hand, environment, what the person must see and operate. Preferences are marked, and they can lose. Safety and legal constraints are not traded in a styling review.
“Industrial design decides how a person recognises, holds, reads and trusts the product: form, controls, colour, finish, and the sequence of use.”
