Bring-up proves the board, then the system, against written criteria.

The Challenge
Bring-up is the ordered proof that a newly assembled board is safe to power, and then that each rail, clock, reset and interface behaves as the design record says. It is not plugging the board into a supply because an LED might blink. The order matters: a short, a reversed regulator or a solder bridge will destroy the evidence, and often the parts, if full power comes first.
You finish a step, you write the observation against the unit’s identity, and only then you take the next risk. A board that “sort of works” with no record has not been brought up.

Description
This Insights guide explains Hardware Bring-Up for founders and engineering teams building hardware that must be manufactured, tested, and handed off. You finish a step, you write the observation against the unit’s identity, and only then you take the next risk. A board that “sort of works” with no record has not been brought up. It also covers before any supply is connected; first power is current-limited and sequential; interfaces, and when to stop.

The Outcome
Bare-board revision, assembly revision, BOM and intended image are labelled on the unit. Visual inspection is done, and any rework already present is noted. Unpowered rail floors are written from this design, then measured.
“Bring-up is the ordered proof that a newly assembled board is safe to power, and then that each rail, clock, reset and interface behaves as the design record says.”
